Martin Short’s daughter’s cause of death has been confirmed. The actor, 75, was dealt with personal tragedy last week when it emerged that Katherine had passed away at the age of 42.
The Hollywood star adopted Katherine and her siblings Oliver and Henry with his late wife Nancy Dolman, who died in 2010 after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. He and Nancy were married for 30 years.
Now, it’s been revealed that Katherine died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to a death certificate, which was issued by L.A. County Dept. of Public Health and seen by TMZ. It’s understood that Katherine was found behind a locked door and a note – which has not been seen by members of the public – was also on the scene.

A friend claimed that her behaviour leading up to the tragedy seemed “normal” and she didn’t show any signs of what was to come. The outlet also noted that, according to the certificate, Katherine will be cremated. Little was known about Katherine, who was a social worker, but she often accompanied her famous father to various showbiz events.
In May 2023, Martin took her to the afterparty for The Producers, posing with Goldie Hawn. She also accompanied her dad on the red carpet in 2011.

According to TMZ, the LAPD responded to Katherine’s Hollywood Hills home on Monday shortly after 6pm. A spokesperson for Martin told the Daily Mail: “It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short.
“The Short family is devastated by this loss, and asks for privacy at this time.” Short’s representative added: “Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.”
According to People, Katherine worked in a private practice as a licensed clinic social worker. She was also involved with the mental health charity Bring Change 2 Mind.
In the days that followed Katherine’s death, Martin was said have been left “inconsolable” by the tragedy.
The source told the Daily Mail: “He is gutted, and as you would expect, his closest friends are surrounding him with love and support.” Images published on the website show a weary looking Martin arriving at his son’s house following the news.
And he was joined by Kurt Russell, who pulled up in his grey Genesis G90 luxury sedan. It’s said the actor was at the property for around 10 minutes.

Others arriving to pay their respects and share messages of condolence included iconic director Steven Spielberg and actor Eugene Levy .
A source also told the publication that other stars, including Martin’s closest pals Steve Martin and Meryl Streep, whom he stars in Only Murders in the Building with, had been trying to comfort their friend. They said: “Both Steve and Meryl are going to make sure to be there for him throughout this heartbreaking time.”
