Need some school run outfit inspo? This three-item formula is what the cool mums are reaching for time and time again
There’s enough pressure on mums without making the school run a catwalk show.
But, lots of mums are heading from drop off to work or to do other errands that sadly, pyjamas just don’t work for.
Each day when I do the nursery run, (usually in tracksuit bottoms and a jumper) I drive past mums walking their kids to school, and there’s a few that always stand out to me.
The reason? They look effortlessly chic.
And the key word here is ‘effortlessly’. They’re looking put together but the outfits don’t give off any ‘I woke up at 4am to look this good’ vibes.
That’s because they’re all sticking to a three-item outfit formula, and now that I’ve spotted it, I’m low-key obsessed.
The simple outfit formula the cool mums are wearing on the school run
The outfits I see these mums wearing consist of just three simple pieces. You’ve probably got them in your wardrobe already.
They include:
・A longline white shirt
・Straight leg jeans
・Loafers or ballet pumps
See, I told you it was simple.
This look screams ‘I’ve got my life together’ rather than ‘I got screamed at all morning by my children’. It’s very Parisian chic, and it’s perfect for spring when there’s no telling what the weather might hold.
Where to shop the look

Handily, you don’t have to head to a designer boutique in Paris to get this chic look – you can shop it right here on the high street. M&S is selling the perfect jeans, loafers and white tops to recreate the look yourself – and you can get it all for under £100.
The jeans cost just £28, so are both stylish and a steal!
Snap up this blouse for £26, or opt for something longer like this one (also £26).
And then complete the outfit with a pair of suede loafers like these. (£50.)
Giving this outfit a bit of an edge isn’t tricky either. By throwing on some gold jewellery, a tote bag, some sunnies and a jacket (we aren’t quite ready for one layer yet!) you can instantly elevate it. Swap out the loafers for heels for a smarter occasion and team with a blazer, or keep things casual by adding a sweatshirt over the white shirt and adding a baseball cap too.
If you’ve always wondered about capsule wardrobes and how they work, this is a great way to start building yours out, starting with these three simple pieces.
