An Emmerdale legend has received a crushing setback as he possibly faces the “end of the road”. ITV soap fans will recall that Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) was shot during the Corriedale crossover in January. Later, whilst in hospital, the Dales’ icon discovered that medics had detected something unusual in one of his tests, prompting them to carry out further investigation with a biopsy.
Cain went back to the hospital last month for his test results, with the doctor delivering some distressing news – Cain has aggressive, though localised, prostate cancer. The village mainstay has only disclosed his diagnosis to his granddaughter, Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill), and his friend and local GP, Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson). Whilst awaiting his surgery, which has been arranged for April, Cain has also been forced to deal with his wife Moira’s (Natalie J Robb) imprisonment, alongside Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) attempting to seize control of Butler’s Farm.
Matters deteriorated further during Monday’s (March 2) episode, which is currently available to stream on ITVX. In the instalment, Lydia (Karen Blick) volunteered to care for Cain’s sons for several days, but a stubborn Cain declined the offer, before quickly realising just how near he was to his limit, reports the Daily Star.

Cain was subsequently infuriated to discover that Joe had organised a herd inspection at the farm owing to a suspected tuberculosis case, meaning nothing could be transported off the farm until they got the all-clear. Local vet Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick) confirmed that she had quarantined the affected cow and notified the Animal and Plant Health Agency, which was dispatching one of its veterinary surgeons to examine the herd.
“If any show up as positive, they will have to be culled. You will get compensation,” Vanessa revealed.
A devastated Cain, who has lately turned to stealing vehicles to generate additional income, responded: “It’s not enough… So, we could lose the whole herd, couldn’t we? This is it, the end of the road.”
Later, Cain delivered more troubling news, stating: “I’ve been on every site I know to try and find a way out of this, but there just isn’t one. If those tests come back positive, those cows can’t even be turned into dog food.”

Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) then disclosed that several of their customers had discovered the situation and were insisting on a substantial price reduction.
Joe, who is suspected of alerting the customers, then reiterated his proposal to purchase the farm, but Cain gave no reply. “I wonder how long you can cope with all these losses you keep racking up,” Joe said. “If you lose the herd, the farm is basically done for.”
However, Matty (Ash Palmisciano) soon expressed his determination to maintain the farm’s operations during Moira’s absence. After watching the tense scenes, numerous Emmerdale fans have voiced their worries about Cain’s health if he persists in tackling farm difficulties, whilst others have implored him to reveal the truth about his cancer diagnosis to his family.
Emmerdale airs weekday nights at 8pm on ITV1 and STV, and Coronation Street airs weekday nights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and STV as part of ITV’s new soap power hour scheduling pattern for Coronation Street and Emmerdale
